BROOKLYN, Mich. (August 18, 2013) – Roush Fenway Racing has had great success at Michigan International Speedway over the years and Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 was no different. Although Carl Edwards did not get his No. 99 Geek Squad Protection Ford to victory lane, he picked up his 12th top-10 finish of the season and remains third in the series points’ standings.
Edwards started 19th for the 400 mile race, but right out of the gate made his steady climb up the ranks. When the first caution came out, Jimmy Fennig advised him that the track was slick and to stay out. By the second caution Edwards was seen at P10. As he approached the 54 lap of the race, Fennig let Edwards know he was the fastest car on the track as he was moving up to 9th place.
RFR teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. blew a right-front tire on lap 70 and Edwards took the caution to pit for a two tire change, fuel and air pressure adjustment. On the restart, Edwards was quickly moving up to fourth place, his highest position of the day. The No. 99 Geek Squad Protection Ford was once again, the fastest car on the track as the halfway mark of the race was nearing just before another caution led to a pit stop gamble and Edwards restarted in 11th place.
A few more cautions came and went and as the last 20 laps were nearing Edwards was in 19th place. The strong Ford was able to rally back up before the 200 lap mark when Edwards took the No. 99 Geek Squad Protection Ford to a strong 10th place finish.
Ford teammate Joey Logano took the No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford to victory lane while Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch, Paul Menard and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top five. Edwards will hit the track on Saturday, August 24th for the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway at 7:30 p.m. EST on ESPN.
